the trailer

The prep for the big trip has been managed by Jeremy, pretty much entirely. I admire his ability to see far ahead, to forecast what we will need, and to timeline the necessary tasks. He bought his Prado in 2018 and started the preps then, installing bash plates to protect the underbody of the car, amongst other accessories for safety and protection.

We also shared a mate’s camper trailer in 2020, during COVID, taking it on a trip along the western border of NSW from Mildura to Tibooburra and Cameron Corner. We slept in a Darche roof-top tent, with two of our three kids sleeping in tents. After 10 stops in two and a half weeks, we established that set-up and pack down for big trips need to be quick and easy and a streamlined process.

We needed a trailer upgrade.

Jeremy found an excellent, hand-built trailer on Facebook Marketplace by Shaun, who modelled it on a Drifta Dot camper. It didn’t have a rooftop tent so, after a lot of research by Jeremy and a couple of 4WD and camping shows, we decided on the Bush Company’s TX27, a clam style tent which opens at both ends for extra light, space and air flow. Shaun very kindly agreed to install the tent, along with a couple of other modifications and we finally picked up the finished trailer in November, 2024.
